Mission and history

At FRI UNIZA, the department provides education and research in the field of information and communication networks with an emphasis on more detailed knowledge about computer communication networks based on the IP protocol (Internet Protocol) and their security. In the field of computer networks, the department provides its own engineering program Applied Network Engineering and, together with KTK UNIZA, has been providing the Information and Network Technologies program since 2020. The department focuses on practice-oriented education offered through the established so-called network academies. The oldest is the Cisco Network Academy. In addition, we also participate in the Juniper Academy Alliance and Fortinet Security Academy.

The department focuses its basic research on cloud computing (CC) systems and computer network security with a focus on security architectures and machine learning in anomaly detection. Applied research is focused on the development of information network services, the use of CC systems in education, data collection from the network and the creation of network traffic datasets. The staff of the department actively participated in the standardization of NGN architecture, protocols, and services (ETSI).

Our team

Laboratories

It is the effort of the department that our students acquire their knowledge and practical skills in quality and currently equipped laboratories. A computer and presentation technology are standard equipment at the FRI. However, a large part of the department’s teaching is focused on computer networks and security. Therefore, in addition to the PC, the equipment also includes a number of special network technology such as routers, switches, WiFi APs, firewalls, servers to support virtualization, VoIP phones and the like. In our laboratories, you will meet equipment from market leaders such as Cisco Systems, Fortinet, Juniper Networks and MikroTik during classes. Maintaining laboratories is not an easy task. Therefore, the department has long spent constant efforts on their maintenance with the support of the faculty and partners.

Laboratory RB-03

Teaching IT subjects

Computer laboratory primarily intended for teaching the subjects of animation and graphics, introduction to the study and the principles of ICS.

Laboratory RB-301

Teaching advanced, CCNP+ level subjects

Laboratory focused on teaching practical subjects in the field of computer networks and security. The laboratory is mainly used for teaching practical engineering subjects in the ASI program, solving final theses, courses of our Cisco Academy, and Fortinet Security Academy and subsequent preparation for industry certifications. The laboratory is therefore equipped with switches, routers from Cisco and Juniper, firewalls from Cisco and Fortinet.

Laboratory RB-302

Workshops and IT subjects

Computer laboratory primarily intended for teaching computer science and mathematics (Process Analysis, Information Network Theory, Communication Theory) subjects of the department, lectures for smaller groups, workshops and meetings.

Laboratory RB-303

Teaching CCNA level subjects

Laboratory focused on teaching practical subjects in the field of computer networks and CCNA level security. The laboratory is mainly used for teaching practical network subjects of the bachelor’s study in the program IaST, Informatics and Computer Engineering. Solution of final theses, courses of our Cisco academy. The laboratory is primarily equipped with devices (switches, routers, firewalls) from Cisco and MikroTik.

Laboratory RB-356

ECDL lab a Pearson VUE Test center

A laboratory primarily intended for testing candidates, in particular ECDL (European Computer Drining License) certification and for the needs of the Pearson VUE testing center.
